Privacy Policy
CipherTel Pty Ltd (“CipherTel”, “we”, “us”) ABN 59 101 635 563 (ACN 101 635 563) is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains how we handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). As a licensed carrier, we also handle information consistent with our obligations under the Telecommunications Act 1997 (Cth).

1. Information we collect
We collect personal information that is reasonably necessary to provide our services and respond to your enquiries, including:
- Contact details — your name, phone number and email address.
- Location details — the suburb, address or coordinates you enter so we can check service availability for you.
- Enquiry details — the service type you are interested in and anything you tell us in a message or support request.
- Service & account information — if you become a customer, details needed to provide, bill and support your service.
- Technical information — limited information your browser sends when you use our website (see cookies & analytics).
2. How we collect it
We collect personal information directly from you when you submit an enquiry, contact or support form, use the coverage checker, email or call us, or become a customer. Where it is unreasonable or impracticable to collect it directly, we may collect it from third parties (for example, a referrer who arranges a connection on your behalf).
3. How we use it
We use your personal information to:
- respond to your enquiry and check coverage at your location;
- provide, maintain, bill and support your service;
- communicate with you about your service, including faults and outages;
- improve our network, services and website; and
- meet our legal and regulatory obligations as a carrier.
We do not sell your personal information. We only use it for the purpose you provided it, a related purpose you would reasonably expect, or as permitted or required by law.
4. The coverage checker & location data
When you use the coverage checker, the address or coordinates you enter are sent to third-party mapping services to convert them into a location, and to a public terrain-data service to assess line of sight. These providers receive only the location query — not your name or contact details — unless you also submit an enquiry. The coverage result is an automated screening estimate; a CipherTel engineer confirms availability before any service is provided.
5. When we disclose it
We may disclose personal information to:
- Service providers who help us operate, including our email/SMTP provider, website hosting, and bot/spam protection (Cloudflare Turnstile);
- Mapping & geocoding providers used by the coverage checker and address look-up (for example, Geoapify, OpenStreetMap/Nominatim and embedded Google Maps), and the public terrain dataset (Geoscience Australia);
- Carriers, suppliers and contractors involved in delivering your service; and
- Government, regulators or law enforcement where required or authorised by law.
6. Overseas disclosure
We store the personal information we collect in Australia, and we do not routinely disclose personal information overseas. Two limited exceptions involve transient processing rather than storage: our bot/spam protection provider (Cloudflare Turnstile) operates a global network, so requests to our forms may be processed outside Australia, but it does not retain your personal information; and the mapping and terrain providers described in section 4 may process your location query outside Australia, but receive only that query — not your name or contact details. Where any overseas processing occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure your information is handled consistently with the APPs.
7. Cookies & analytics
Our website does not set cookies of its own — there are no logins or user accounts. To understand how the site is used (pages viewed, links clicked, coverage checks run) we use a cookie-less analytics tool (OpenPanel) that we host on our own infrastructure: the data stays with us, is never shared with advertising networks, and is not used to identify you. Coverage-check analytics record only the outcome and an approximate area — never the address you typed. Two embedded third-party services may store cookies or similar data in your browser under their own privacy policies: Cloudflare Turnstile, which protects our forms against spam and bots, and the Google Map on our contact page. You can block or clear cookies through your browser settings.
8. Security & retention
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. We keep personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes above or to meet our legal obligations, and then take reasonable steps to destroy or de-identify it within 14 days of the end of the retention period required by law.
9. Access & correction
You may ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, and to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete. Contact us using the details below. We will respond within a reasonable time and may need to verify your identity first.
10. Complaints
If you believe we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles, please tell us using the details below so we can investigate. You can also use our complaints process. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
11. Changes & contact
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always available on this page, with the date it last changed shown at the top.
